There
are two ways of making faïence although for a long time
only the intensive firing method was known:
The
article in question was make with clay, covered with putty powder,
decorated, and then fired. Used this method had the effect of
considerably limiting number of colours that could be used however.
The appearance of porcelaine in Europe in the
middle of the eighteenth Century gave faïencemakers
the idea of a two-stage firing process.
